What Does The Tire Pressure Monitoring System Do?

What Does The Tire Pressure Monitoring System Do?

Anytime the Tire Pressure Monitoring System warning light comes on the dashboard, there is a possible low tire pressure condition on one of the four tires. Tire pressure can drop because of cold weather conditions, which may cause the TPMS light to come on. As the tire warms up from normal conditions, the light may turn off. If the cold weather causes the TPMS light to stay on, consider checking the vehicle's tire pressure when the tires are cold and inflating the tire to the pressure indicated on the inside of the driver's door.

How Does The Tire Pressure Monitoring System Work?

Since an under-inflated tire can impede handling and be a safety hazard, the TPMS uses sensors mounted in each tire that uses pressure to send readings to the central electronic control unit. The system then can evaluate whether the pressure is in an acceptable range. If the reading is significantly below the recommended level, the vehicle will alert the driver through the Multi-Information Display located on the instrument panel. As helpful as TMPS is, it is still recommended that you manually check your tires regularly. The vehicle's pressure display can be accessed anytime, using the Multi-Information Display controls on the steering wheel.

Benefits Of Having The Tire Pressure Monitoring System

There are many benefits to having a TPMS equipped vehicle, such as staying safe knowing that your tires are properly inflated. Other benefits of proper tire pressure include better traction, even tire wear, and optimal fuel efficiency.
